Essential Non-Toxic Cleaning Items
White Vinegar: An all-purpose cleaner, effective for killing most mold, bacteria, and germs, due to its acidic nature.
Baking Soda: Great for scrubbing surfaces, it's a mild abrasive that can help with tough stains and also neutralizes odors.
Castile Soap: A plant-based soap that is versatile and can be used for everything from dishwashing to laundry.
Lemon Juice: Has antibacterial and antiseptic qualities, making it a great natural whitener and stain remover.
Essential Oils: Adding oils like tea tree, lavender, or eucalyptus can provide natural fragrance and additional antimicrobial properties to homemade cleaners.
Hydrogen Peroxide: A natural disinfectant that can be used to sanitize surfaces, whiten laundry, and even clean wounds.
Olive or Vegetable Oil (for polishing): Mixed with a bit of lemon juice or vinegar, it works well for polishing wood surfaces.
ALL PURPOSE BORAX!!
How to Use These Items
All-Purpose Cleaner: Mix equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle. Add a few drops of essential oil for fragrance if desired. This solution can clean countertops, appliances, and glass surfaces.
Scrubbing Paste: Combine baking soda with a bit of water to form a paste. This can be used for scrubbing tiles, grout, and even pots and pans.
Wood Polish: Mix 1 cup of olive oil with ½ cup lemon juice for a natural furniture polish.
Glass Cleaner: Mix 1 part vinegar with 1 part water and use it to clean windows and mirrors. Use a clean, lint-free cloth for a streak-free shine.
Disinfectant: Use hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle to disinfect surfaces. Be sure to let it sit for a few minutes before wiping away.
Benefits
Health: Reducing the use of harsh chemicals can improve indoor air quality and reduce health risks associated with them.
Environment: Natural cleaners are more eco-friendly, often biodegradable, and can reduce plastic packaging waste if you make them yourself.
Cost: Many of these ingredients are cheaper than commercial cleaning products and can be used in multiple ways around the house.
Precautions
Test Surfaces First: Some surfaces, like granite or marble, may not react well to acidic cleaners like vinegar. Always test a small, inconspicuous area first.
Label Homemade Cleaners: Keep them labeled and out of reach of children and pets.
Shelf Life: Homemade cleaners might not last as long as commercial ones, so make them in small batches.
Switching to non-toxic cleaning methods can be a simple and rewarding process, contributing to a healthier home and planet.
